Abigail Adams was born on April 19, 1989. She trained at Cypress Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2007.

In 1999, Abigail competed level eight. She placed in the top fifteen at Regionals. As a level ten in 2002, Abigail finished first all-around at the WOGA Classic. She won floor at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished 18th all-around. Abigail qualified to junior international elite in 2003. She competed at both the American Classic and US Classic. In 2004, Abigail competed at the US Classic. As a level ten in 2005, she won beam and the all-around at the WOGA Classic. She placed second all-around at the Pikes Peak Cup. She missed the 2006 season due to an injury.

As a freshman at Maryland in 2008, Abigail competed on beam in eleven meets, vault in ten meets, floor in ten meets, bars and the all-around in seven meets. Abigail was a member of the EAGL All-Academic team. In 2009, Abigail competed on vault, bars and floor in all fourteen meets. She competed on beam and the all-around twelve times. She earned first-team All-EAGL honors on bars, floor and the all-around. She earned second-team All-EAGL honors on vault. Abigail earned EAGL All-Tournament recognition on vault, beam and floor. She won beam at the EAGL Championships. She was a member of the EAGL All-Academic team.

In 2010, Abigail competed in the all-around eleven times. She won the all-around title at the EAGL Championships. Abigail earned a spot on all five EAGL All-Tournament teams. She also earned first-team All-EAGL honors on bars, floor and the all-around. She earned second-team honors on vault. Abigail was also a member of the EAGL All-Academic team and ACC Honor Roll. She earned EAGL Gymnast of the Week in January. As a senior in 2011, Abigail competed in the all-around in all thirteen meets. She won the all-around at the EAGL Championships for the second year. Abigail was a first-team All-EAGL honoree on beam and the all-around. She earned second-team honors on bars and floor. For the fourth time, Abigail was a member of the EAGL All-Academic team. She earned EAGL Gymnast of the Week twice.
