Amy Ferguson was born on July 13, 1990. She trained at Gemini Gymnastics through the 2004 season. She then moved to LaFleur's Gymnastics in Tampa during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2008.

In 2004, Amy competed level nine. She finished third on bars at the Gasparilla Classic. She competed at Regionals. In 2006, she won floor and the all-around at Regionals. She placed ninth on vault and fifth on floor at Easterns. She finished 20th all-around. Amy moved up to level ten in 2007. She finished second all-around at the Lightning City Invitational. She placed third all-around at the Buckeye Classic. At Regionals, she finished fifth all-around. Amy competed at JO Nationals. In 2008, she won beam, floor and the all-around at the Tampa Bay Classic. She finished first on bars and third all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed second on floor. Amy finished 21st all-around at JO Nationals.

As a freshman at Florida in 2009, Amy competed on floor in every meet. She finished third against Alabama. She was a member of the NACGC Scholastic All-American team. She was also on the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. During her sophomore season, she finished third on floor against LSU. She placed second on floor against Georgia. Amy also finished third on floor against Arkansas. She was named to the SEC Honor Roll. Amy earned NACGC Scholastic All-American honors for the second time. In 2011, Amy competed on floor several times. She finished third on floor against Kentucky and at LSU. She earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
