Alaina Johnson was born on October 2, 1990 to Beverly and Randy. She has one older brother, Chris, and one older sister, Bethany. They reside in Tyler, Texas. She will graduate from Robert E. Lee High School in 2010. She began gymnastics at an early age of six in 1997. Alaina trains at Texas East Gymnastics under Martin & Stacy Parsley.

In 2002, Alaina competed as a level nine and finished fifth all-around at Level 9 Regionals. She finished eleventh on vault at the Western Championships, the highest meet a level nine can attend. She moved up to level ten in 2003. Alaina finished in the top seven at Level 10 Regionals. This qualified her to the Level 10 National Championships. Alaina competed as a level ten again in 2004 and also competed as a Junior Pre-Elite at the US Challenge. She began competing as a junior international elite in 2005. She qualified to the US National Championships where she placed 23rd all-around. She moved up to the senior division in 2006 and qualified to her first Senior US National Championships and placed 18th all-around. She continued on the elite path in 2007. She competed at her second US National Championships.

Alaina had a break out year in 2008. She qualified to the US National Championships at the May National Elite Qualifier. Later that month she finished ninth all-around at the US Classic in Houston, Texas. At the US National Championships in Boston, Alaina snagged the last spot on the US National Team. This performance also qualified her for the US Olympic Team Trials. Alaina had a strong meet. Alaina qualified for the 2009 US National Championships at the April Training Camp. She had a strong meet at Nationals, making her second US National Team. Alaina signed with the University of Florida in November.

After struggling with shin splints, Alaina decided to compete level ten in 2010. She made her season debut at the Rose City Classic, winning vault, bars, floor and the all-around. Alaina finished third all-around at the State Championships. She won vault and floor. She finished first on floor and the all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, Alaina placed second on vault, first on bars, fifth on beam, fourth on floor and first all-around!

As a freshman at Florida in 2011, Alaina earned first-team All-American honors on vault, bars and floor. She earned SEC Freshman of the Year. At Regionals, Alaina won vault and the all-around. She earned first-teamm All-SEC honors in the all-around. She was a member of the SEC All-Freshman Team. Alaina earned four SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week honors and one SEC Gymnast of the Week award. She earned five vault titles, five bars titles, three all-around titles and one floor title.
