Hatsune Akaogi was born on December 26, 1989 in Japan. She trained at West Valley Gymnastics through the 2006 season. She then moved to Airborne. Hatsune graduated from high school in 2008.
In 1999, Hatsune made the National TOPs Team. She competed level eight in 2000. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She competed level ten in 2003. She placed second all-around at the State Championships. In 2004, Hatsune finished in the top ten at the State Championships. Hatsune won floor at the 2005 Optional Invite. She finished first on beam, floor and the all-around at the State Championships. She had a strong performance at Regionals. In 2006, Hatsune won beam at the San Diego Classic and Hard Rock Invitational. She won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. At the State Championships, she finished sixth all-around. She won vault at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished 15th all-around.
Hatsune did not compete for most of the 2007 season due to injuries. She finished second on bars, her only event, at the State Championships. She returned to full strength in 2008. Hatsune placed third on vault at the Seattle Open. She finished second on beam at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. At the Golden State Classic, she placed first on beam and second all-around, with a 38.100. At the State Championships, she won vault, beam, floor and the all-around. Hatsune won vault and beam at Regionals. She finished fourth all-around. At JO Nationals, she placed sixth on vault.
As a freshman at Washington in 2009, Hatsune competed in the all-around in every meet. She earned Pac-10 Second-Team honors in the all-around. She won the all-around title against Cal and Illinois State. During her sophomore season, Hatsune again competed in the all-around in every meet. She finished second in the all-around against Nebraska. She won the all-around against UCLA. She again won the all-around title against Cal. She won her third all-around title of the season against Arizona. She won vault against SPU. Hatsune missed the 2011 season because of an Achilles tear.
