Ashley Alden was born on September 8, 1984. She is the daughter of Ron and Kristen Alden. She trained at American Academy under Leonard Isaacs during her club career. She attended Warren Township High School.
In 1996, Ashley won the level nine state all-around title. She competed as a level ten in 2000. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. In 2001, she finished tenth all-around at the JO National Championships after winning beam at Regionals. Ashley also competed in high school gymnastics. In 2000, she won beam at the Illinois State High School Championships. She won the Illinois State High School title in 2001 as a sophomore. In 2003, Ashley placed seventh all-around at the high school national championships.
At Iowa State, she competed on beam in all but one regular-season meet during her freshman season. She competed on beam, bars and floor during her sophomore season. As a junior, Ashley regularly competed on beam and floor. During her senior season, she continued competing on beam and floor. She could not compete in the first six meets because of an ankle injury. She was named to the Academic All-Big 12 second-team for the third time in her career.
