Andrea Mitchell was born on January 6, 1990. She trained at Northwest Aerials in 2001. She moved to Auburn in 2002. In 2003, Andrea competed for Cascade Elite. After moving to Tennessee, Andrea competed with TNT in 2004. She then moved to Premier Athletics through the end of her club career. Andrea graduated from high school in 2007.

In 2001, Andrea competed level seven. She placed third on vault at the Rainier Cup. She moved up to level nine in 2002. She finished second on bars and third all-around at Regionals. She placed ninth on floor at Westerns. Andrea finished 21st all-around. She continued competing level nine in 2003. She competed at Westerns. Andrea moved up to level ten in 2004. She finished seventh all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2005, Andrea finished fourth all-around at Regionals. She finished fifth on vault and eighth all-around at JO Nationals.

Andrea placed first on bars at the Flip Fest Invitational in 2006. She won beam and floor at the State Championships. She placed second all-around. In 2007, Andrea finished first on vault and the all-around at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She also won the all-around title at the Sweetheart Invitational. At the State Championships, she won bars, beam, floor and the all-around. Andrea won the all-around title at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she placed eighth on vault, fifth on beam, sixth on floor and third all-around.

As a freshman at Kentucky in 2008, Andrea competed in all fifteen meets. She competed in the all-around nine times. Andrea won bars at Centenary and the all-around at Ohio State. She was named to the Freshman All-SEC Team. In 2009, Andrea competed in seven meets. She competed in the all-around three times. Andrea missed most of the season due to a back injury. During her junior season, she competed in the all-around in all thirteen meets. As a senior, Andrea won Kentucky's first all-around title on the road against a SEC school in five years with a victory at Auburn. SHe was named SEC Gymnast of the Week after finishing first all-around against Bowling Green and George Washington. Andrea won two event titles on bars, three on beam and two on floor.
