Amanda Vaughn Montgomery was born on May 18, 1987. She is the daughter of Ladson and Angie Montgomery. Her father graduated from Alabama while her mother graduated from Alabama's Law School. She has a brother named Ladson. She has two sisters, Kelsie and Samantha. Samantha is a currently level ten. Kelsie competed for Auburn. Amanda trained at Starlight Gymnastics during her club career with Vesselina Ivanov and Valentin Marinov-Ivanov. Amanda graduated from Bartram Trail High School in 2005.

In 2000, Amanda competed as a level nine. She finished second on vault at Regionals. She qualified for Easterns, the highest competition a level nine can attend. In 2001, Amanda moved up to level ten. She finished fourth all-around at Regionals. This was her first time qualifying for the JO National Championships. At the 2002 Level 10 Regional Championships, she finished fourth on vault. In 2003, she finished fourth on bars at Regionals. Amanda took the last spot for the JO National Championships. At JO Nationals, she finished fourth all-around! This gave her a spot on the JO National Team. In 2005, she qualified to her third JO National Championships. She won beam at States.

Amanda walked on to the University of Alabama Gymnastics Team. She competed in some exhibitions her freshman year. She was a Scholastic All-American and Academic All-SEC team member. During her sophomore season, she was a Scholastic All-American and on the Academic All-SEC team. She competed on bars and beam. As a junior, she was the team co-captain. She was a Scholastic All-American and on the Academic All-SEC team. She continued competing on bars and beam. As a senior, she was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
