Alex Archer was born on February 17, 1993. Her older sister, McKenna, is a gymnast at Cornell. Alex began gymnastics at the age of two at Costa Mesa Parks & Recreation. She trained at New Hope through the 2003 season. She then moved to Wildfire for two years. Alex trained at SCEGA in 2006 before moving to Team OC. Alex trained at Precision during her senior season in 2011. Alex graduated from high school in 2011.

In 2001, Alex competed level five. She finished in the top fifteen all-around at the State Championships. She moved up to level six in 2002. She finished third on bars at the State Championships. Alex immediately began competing level seven in 2003. She moved up to level eight in 2004. She won vault, floor and the all-around at the San Diego Classic. She placed fifth all-around at the State Championships. She finished in the top fifteen all-around at Regionals. Alex began competing level nine in 2005. She finished third all-around at the LA Classic. She placed second all-around at the Surf City Classic. She competed at Regionals. In 2006, Alex finished second all-around at the Long Beach Open. She placed first on bars and beam at the State Championships. She finished second all-around. She competed at Regionals.

Alex began competing level ten in 2007. She finished first on floor and third all-around at the State Championships. She finished 15th all-around at Regionals. In 2008, Alex won beam at the State Championships. She placed second all-around. She finished eighth all-around at Regionals. She finished third all-around at the 2009 Wine Country Classic. She finished fourth all-around at the State Championships. Alex finished seventh all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals.

Alex finished third on beam at the 2010 Heart of a Champion Invitational. She finished fourth all-around at the Malibu Coast Challenge. At the State Championships, she won bars. Alex placed second on bars at Regionals. She qualified for the JO National Invitational Tournament where she placed second on bars. In 2011, Alex finished second all-around at the Snowflake Classic. She placed third all-around at both the Classic Rock Invitational and Malibu Coast Challenge. At the State Championships, she placed fourth on vault. Alex placed second on vault and fifth all-around at Regionals.
