Ashley Smith was born on January 18, 1999. She trains at Northwind Gymnastics in Georgia. Ashley began gymnastics at the age of four when her mom was teaching preschool classes.

Ashley began competing in 2006 as a level five. She moved up to level six in 2007, helping her team win the Georiga State Championships. Individually, she took third all-around. In 2008, Ashley competed level seven. She finished second all-around at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She won the all-around at the Gasparilla Classic. At the prestigious National Gymnastics Challenge, she placed first on bars and third all-around. Ashley ended her season at the Georgia State Championships, winning bars and beam. She finished second all-around.

Ashley moved up to level eight in 2009. She won beam and the all-around at the Optional Kickoff. She won bars, beam, floor and the all-around at the National Gymnastics Challenge. At State, she finished second on bars and qualified to Regionals. Ashley ended her season with a fourth place finish at Regionals. She placed second on beam and floor.

Ashley competed level nine in 2010. She won bars and beam at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. At the Presidential Classic, she won vault, bars and the all-around. Ashley won vault, beam and the all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed second all-around and first on beam. She ended her season at Easterns with a strong seventh place finish. Ashley began competing level ten in 2011. She won her first level ten meet at the Flip Fest Invitational. She finished second all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. Ashley won vault and the all-around at the Tiger Paw Classic. She placd first on vault and floor at the National Gymnastics Challenge. At the State Championships, Ashley won vault, beam and the all-around. In April, Ashley finished fifth in the all-around and fourth on uneven bars at Regionals. There, she qualified to the JO Nationals in Long Beach, California. She concluded her level 10 season at the JO Nationals where she placed 18th in the all-around and sixth on uneven bars out of 57 gymnasts.
