Alyssa Erin Beckerman was born in Middleton, New Jersey on January 23, 1981. She is the daughter of Howard and Melanie. Alyssa has two brothers. Matthew is older than her and Jared is younger. She began gymnastics in 1986. Her favorite event is uneven bars. Alyssa trained at North Stars until 1997. She then trained at Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy. After the Olympics, she went to UCLA.

She first competed as an international elite in 1996. She finished high enough at the US Classic to compete at the US Nationals. In 1997, Alyssa moved up to senior international elite. At the US Classic she finished ninth all-around. At Nationals, she placed in the top twenty and made the National Team. Following Nationals, Alyssa competed at the Trophee Marseille meet in France.

She improved a lot heading into 1998. At the American Classic she finished tenth all-around. Alyssa improved to fourth all-around at the US Classic. At Nationals, she finished eighth all-around and second on bars. Following Nationals, Alyssa took home second all-around at the Ecoair Gymnastics Cup.

Alyssa started off her 1999 season be competing at the American Cup. She followed that up by helping the USA senior team finish second at the International Team Championships. Alyssa finished fourth all-around at the US Nationals. She improved to third at the World Team Trials. Alyssa helped the USA team finish second at the Pan Am Games before pulling out of the World Team due to a wrist injury.

In 2000, Alyssa finished first all-around at the Spieth Sogipa Invitational. At the US Classic she finished third all-around. Alyssa continued having great performance at Nationals. She finished fifth all-around and first on beam. Alyssa was the alternate to the 2000 Olympic Team. She competed for UCLA from 2001-2003. She was a First-Team All-American on beam in 2002.
