Joanna Marie Bennett was born in Santa Rosa, California on May 2, 1987. She is the daughter of Kelly and Donna Bennett. She has a younger brother and younger sister. She graduated from Healdsburg High School. Joanna trained at Rohnert Park until the 2004 season. She competed for Cal West. After Cal West closed, she moved back to Rohnert Park for her senior season.
In 2003, Joanna competed as a level ten gymnast. She finished sixth all-around at States. She placed fourth on bars at Regionals. In 2004, Joanna placed fourth all-around and first on floor at States. At Regionals, she qualified to her first JO National Championships. She had a strong finish to her season at JO Nationals. In 2005, she won the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. Joanna placed fourth all-around and first on bars at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished in the top ten!
During her freshman season, Joanna competed on vault, bars and floor. She scored strongly when she did not fall. As a sophomore, Jennifer competed on vault bars and floor at the first meet. She did not compete then next four meets. She returned to compete on bars and beam. During her junior season, she missed the majority because of an injury. However, she won vault at the opening tri-meet. She competed in the all-around against Davis/Towson. In 2009, she competed on bars and beam against UCLA. She also participated on vault, floor and the all-around. She finished second all-around against Arizona. She was a Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention.
