Alise Ashley Moss-Blackwell was born in Sacramento, California on March 26, 1987. She is the daughter of Frank and Renae Blackwell. Alise has one sister, Judi. Her cousin, Sylvia Crowley, plays in the WNBA. She trained at Gymagic in 1998. In the later years of her club career, Alise trained at Airborne Gymnastics. She graduated from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose in 2005.

As a club gymnast, Alise competed as a level ten. She qualified to the 2002 JO National Championships. She won the State Uneven Bars Title in 2002 and 2004. She won floor in 2002 as well. In 2005, Alise placed third on bars at States. As a freshman, she competed on bars at every meet. She also competed on vault and floor. She continued those events as a sophomore. She qualified for the NCAA Regional meet as an individual in the all-around. In 2008, Alise competed in all thirteen meets. She won bars three times. She was named WAC Gymnast of the Week after winning two events and the all-around at CSU Fullerton. As a senior in 2009, she earned All-WAC second-team honors on bars. She competed in all ten meets on vault and bars and nine times on beam. She won bars against Sac State. She won beam against Seattle Pacific.
