Kera Bolen was born in Portland, Oregon on July 19, 1987. She is the daughter of Ava and Kerry. She has two older brothers, Sean and Stephen. She trained at Metro Gymnastics from 2003 to 2005. Before that, she trained at Oregon Gymnastics Academy.

In 2001, Kera competed as a level nine. She qualified to the Western Championships by placing third all-around at the Regional Championships. She also finished first on floor and second on vault. In 2003, she moved up to compete as a level ten. She qualified to compete at the JO National Championships. She competed at the JO National Championships again in 2004 and 2005.

In the fall of 2005, she began attending school at Oregon State University. She competed on floor and bars throughout the season. She was an NAGAC Scholastic All-American. During her sophomore season, she competed on bars and floor at the beginning of the season. She earned Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention. In 2008, she competed in all fourteen meets on bars and floor. During her senior season in 2009, she competed on vault, bars and floor.
