Kylee Botterman was born on May 12, 1989. She is the daughter of Hank and Laurie. Her older sisters, Dayne and Marijka, were both gymnasts with the University of Illinois. Kylee began gymnastics at a local park district. After that closed down, she moved to Gym-Kinetics, where she trained the rest of her club career.

In 1999, Kylie competed as a level seven. She finished fifth all-around at States. She won two bronze medals, one on beam and one on vault. She jumped up to level nine in 2000. Kylee finished fourth all-around at States. In 2001, she swept the Beach Break Classic as a level nine. Kylee moved up to level ten in 2003.

She continued competing as a level ten in 2004. She won the San Diego Classic. At States, Kylee won the all-around title. She then won the Regional all-around, bars, beam, and floor titles. At JO Nationals, she finished fourth all-around. She won vault. Kylee also finished fourth on bars. In 2005, she won the all-around title at the Salto Invitational. She also defended her state title. At Regionals, Kylee placed second all-around. She won bars and floor. She did not compete at JO Nationals.

Kylee had a great 2006 season. She finished second all-around at the CUpid Twist. At Regionals, she won the all-around and bars titles. She finished second on the other events. Kylee won the silver medal on vault at JO Nationals. She finished eighth all-around. Her senior year was in 2007. She finished third all-around at the Bravo Classic. She won vault. At For Love or Money, she won everything except for vault. Kylee also won the Gasparilla Classic. At States, she finished second all-around. She finished second at Regionals. Kylee won bars and floor. At JO Nationals, she finished sixth all-around. She won a silver medal on floor.

As a freshman at the University of Michigan, she was an NCAA All-American first-team on bars and second-team on vault. She earned All-Big Ten First Team honors. She won the Big Ten Championships on floor and placed second on vault. She qualified for the NCAA Event Finals on vault. She finished third on floor at the Regional Championships. She won five straight bars titles in February.

During her sophomore season, Kylee won floor at NCAA Regionals, securing an individual spot on floor. She earned NCAA All-American first-team honors on floor. She also won the Big Ten title on floor. She finished second in the all-around earning All-Big Ten First-Team honors. During her all-around debut against Minnesota, she won. She won two other all-around titles as a sophomore. She won her first beam title at the State of Michigan Classic. She tied her sister to win vault at the MSU Quad. Kylee also won the floor title.
