Mariel Box was born on December 11, 1989. Her sister, Mary Beth, was also a gymnast. Mariel trained at Cartersville Twisters under Irina Podgornaya, Andrei Kouznetsov and Galyna Losinska during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2008.

In 2000, Mariel competed level five. She competed at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She competed in the silver level of prep-optional. She competed level nine in 2004. Mariel finished first on floor at Regionals. She also won the all-around title. At Easterns, she placed sixth on vault, third on bars and third on floor. She finished 13th all-around after a fall on beam.

Mariel competed level ten in 2005. In 2006, she finished first on vault at the State Championships. She finished tenth all-around at Regionals. She placed third on beam. In 2007, she finished fourth on vault and beam at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She won vault and bars at the State Championships. She finished eleventh all-around at Regionals.

Mariel redshirted her freshman year at Georgia. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman Academic Honor Roll. In 2010, Mariel competed on vault at Alabama and against Stanford. She earned a spot on the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll. In 2011, Mariel competed on vault and floor at Denver. She also competed on vault against Utah. Mariel competed on vault and floor against Auburn. At Arkansas, she competed on vault. She also competed on vault at the SEC Championships.
