Mary Burke was born on January 31, 1990. Her older sister, Katie, competed for Iowa. Mary trained at American Academy in Wheeling, Illinois. She graduated from high school in 2008.
In 2000, Mary began competing level ten. She finished 12th all-around at Regionals in 2001. In 2003, she finished 13th all-around at Regionals. Mary placed in the top twenty all-around at Regionals in 2004. She finished in the top fifteen all-around at Regionals in 2005. In 2006, Mary placed third all-around at Regionals. She placed eighth on floor at JO Nationals. She finished 21st all-around. In 2007, Mary won floor and placed second all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2008, Mary placed eighth on bars and 12th all-around at JO Nationals.
As a freshman at Missouri in 2009, Mary competed in the all-around. She earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Championship team on vault. She finished third all-around at the Eagle Invitational. In 2010, Mary won bars, floor and the all-around against Ohio State. She was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week. She won bars against Iowa State. Against New Hampshire, Mary won bars and beam. She earned a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 Team. Mary also earned All-Big 12 Conference honors in the all-around.
During her junior season in 2011, Mary won the all-around against SEMO. She won the all-around for the second week in a row against Iowa State. She earned Gymnast of the Week by the Big 12 Conference of the Week twice in January. She earned the honor a third week in February. Mary won all-around against Oklahoma. She earned her fourth Big 12 Gymnastics of the Week honor later in February. Mary won the all-around and balance beam titles at the Missouri Quad meet. At the Big 12 Championships, she won the all-around title. Mary earned All-Big honors on beam and in the all-around. She earned Academic All-Big 12 first-team honors as well. She finished fourth all-around at Regionals.
