Katie Canning was born on July 18, 1989. She trained at Walker's until 2003. She then switched to Brestyan's American Gymnastics.

Katie competed level eight in 2001. She finished fifth all-around at Regionals. In 2002, she moved up to level nine. After finishing fourth all-around at Regionals, she competed at the Eastern Championships. Katie finished in the top twenty at Easterns.

In 2003, she moved up to level ten. Katie finished fifth all-around at States. She was the alternate for JO Nationals. With her new gym in 2004, she won the all-around title at States. At Regionals, she finished fifth all-around. Katie qualified for the JO National Championships. At the State Championships in 2005, Katie finished third all-around. She won beam. At Regionals, she finished second all-around. At JO Nationals, she finished 14th all-around. Katie continued competing as a level ten in 2006. She placed third all-around at States. At Regionals, Katie finished second all-around. She ended her season at the JO National Championships.

As a freshman at Temple, she won the all-around at the Liberty Classic. This was her first all-around competition. She placed third on beam at the George Washington Invitational. She finished second on beam and floor against Rutgers. She had a great season as a sophomore. She won the all-around and vault at the USGA Championships. She finished second on floor. She earned first-team All-America honors. She also qualified to the NCAA East Regionals as an individual. She was the first Temple gymnast to qualify since 2005. She earned ECAC Gymnast of the Week three times. She won the ECAC beam title. In 2010, Katie placed second on beam against Rutgers. She also placed second on beam at the Towson Invitational. Katie won vault and floor at the West Chester Tri-Meet. She placed second on vault at the Bridgeport Quad-Meet. She won beam at the Penn Quad Meet. Katie placed second on beam at the ECAC Championships. She was a first-team USAG All-American on beam. Katie did not compete in 2011. She returned in 2012 as a redshirt senior.
