Rebecca Cardenas was born on May 20, 1990. She trained at Aloha Gym World through the 2002 season. She then moved to Hawaiian Island Twisters. She graduated from high school in 2008.

In 2002, Rebecca competed level nine. She placed sixth on bars at Westerns. She competed level ten in 2004. She finished second all-around at the State and Regional Championships. She placed fourth on bars, ninth on beam and fifth all-around at JO Nationals. In 2006, Rebecca won bars at the Go For It Classic. She won the all-around title at the State Championships. Rebecca finished first on vault and third all-around at Regionals. She placed third on beam and sixth on vault at JO Nationals. She finished 25th all-around. In 2007, Rebecca finished first on vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the AOGC Invitational. She finished first all-around at the State Championships. She finished second on beam at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. As a senior in 2008, she finished third all-around at the State Championships. Rebecca won vault and placed third all-around at Regionals. She placed tenth on bars at JO Nationals.

As a freshman at Arizona, Rebecca competed on bars and floor in thirteen meets. She competed on vault four times. She tied for first on floor against Stanford. Rebecca was named Athlete of the Week in February and Student Athlete of the Month in April/May. She missed the 2010 season due to a knee injury. In 2011, Rebecca competed in all twelve meets. She competed on bars four times and floor times. She exhibitioned bars seven times and vault once.
