Raylyn Marie Cardeno was born in Oxnard, California on July 13, 1985. She is the daughter of Ray and Carolyn Cardeno. Raylyn has a sister, Shina, who also competed for San Jose. They are the only set of sisters to compete together at SJSU. She graduated from Liberty High School in 2003. During her club career, she competed at Stars Gymnastics in Bakersfield, California. She won the vault state title in 2002. She qualified to level eight or nine Regionals from 1998-2002. She competed as a level ten in 2003.

In the fall of 2004, she began competing for San Jose State University. She competed on vault and floor. She was a member of the vault team in all eleven meets. As a junior, she competed on vault. She also did floor occasionally. As a senior, Raylyn competed on floor.
