Amanda Castillo was born on February 25, 1988. She began gymnastics at the age of five. She trained at Brown's Central until 2002. She then switched to Orlando Metro Gymnastics. Amanda stayed with Jeff Woods until college. She mainly competed as a level ten but did qualify to the elite level.
In 2000, she competed as a level nine. She competed at the Region 8 Level 9 Regional Championships. In 2001, she moved up to level ten. Amanda placed third on vault at the Charleston Cup. She then competed at the Level 10 Regional Championships. Amanda improved greatly by the 2004 season. She finished fourth all-around at Regionals. She won vault and bars. Amanda placed third on floor. At the JO National Championships, she finished sixteenth all-around. She won floor and finished fourth on beam!
She continued competing as a level ten in 2005. At the Florida Level 10 State Championships, Amanda won the vault, bars, floor and all-around titles! She then won the Regional Championships all-around title. At the JO Nationals in California, Amanda placed second on vault and third on bars. She won floor and finished fourth all-around! Amanda had a great season in 2006. She swept the gold medals at the Atlanta Crown meet. She then won every event except for beam at States. At Regionals, Amanda won every event except for beam again. At the JO National Championships, she placed fourth all-around. She finished third on bars and second on floor.
In 2007, Amanda was named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. Her team named her the Newcomer of the Year. She earned fourteen event titles including two in the all-around and six on floor. Amanda was a four-time All-American in the all-around, vault, bars and beam. She placed third at the NCAA Championships. She advanced to NCAA finals on vault and beam. She was SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Year. She won floor at the SEC Championships to be named to the All-SEC first team. She was the first Gator gymnast to win a league floor title since 1989. At the NCAA Regional Championships, she won floor and placed second all-around. She earned SEC Gymnast of the Week in late February.
During her sophomore season, she earned eighteen event titles. She won eight on floor, four on bars, three on beam, two all-around and one on vault. She was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the second year in a row. She earned three All-American honors in the all-around, vault and floor. She competed in floor event finals at the NCAA National Championships. She earned two SEC Gymnast of the Week honors. Amanda won her second SEC floor title. She also won her second NCAA Regional title.
As a junior, Amanda won the all-around against Michigan. She opened the 2009 season by winning beam against Oklahoma. Her season ended in March after a partial tear of her left Achilles tendon. She was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
