Justine Akiko Cephus was born in Los Angeles, California on June 24, 1985. She is the daughter of Jolene and Alonzo Cephus. She has one younger brother, Alexander. She trained at the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics until 2002. She then began trained at LA Lights. She moved to All Olympia for her senior season.
In 2000, Justine competed as a level ten. She competed at the State Championships. She finished third all-around at the Level Ten State Championships in 2002. In 2002, Justine won beam at the JO National Championships. She was also fourth on floor and third on vault. In 2003, she won the all-around State Title. At Regionals, she finished fourth all-around. Justine placed second on beam at JO Nationals. Justine began attending UC Berkeley in the fall of 2003. She competed on floor in her freshman season. She was out with an injury in 2005. In 2006, Justine earned honorable mention pac-10 All-Academic. She competed on all of the events. As a senior, she competed on vault five times, beam five times and floor ten times. Justine qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships as an individual on floor.
