Melissa Magen Chan was born in Palo Alto, California on November 21, 1986. She is the daughter of Doug and Diana. She has one younger brother, Chris. She trained at Airborne during her club years.

In 1998, Melissa qualified to the JO National Championships. In 1999, she competed as a junior international elite. Melissa competed at the 1999 American Classic and did great. She was not able to compete at the National Championships because of an injury. In 2000, Melissa was able to compete at Nationals. She made her first national team. She also became the junior national vault champion. Melissa competed as a level 10 in 2002. She won her first JO National all-around title. Melissa also took home the gold on vault and beam. Melissa continued doing level 10 in 2003. She finished first all-around at Regionals, qualifying to her second JO Nationals. Melissa also won the vault and beam titles. In Colorado, she finished first all-around.

2004 was another year of success for Melissa. She won the Norcal State Championships. Besides the all-around she won vault and floor. Melissa won every event at the Regional Championships besides bars. Melissa won her third JO National All-around title in Florida later. She also was tops on vault and beam. Melissa did not compete much in 2005. Her exciting event was beginning college at UCLA. During the 2006 NCAA Season Melissa was not able to compete much due to an injury. Melissa left the UCLA team for most of the 2007 season. She rejoined to compete beam in the last few meets. She contributed a 9.9 during the Super Six to help the UCLA Team finished fourth.

As a junior, Melissa was limited to five meets because of ankle injuries. She competed on vault, beam and floor during those meets. She did not compete at all during the 2009 season.
