Alyssa Chapman was born on November 30, 1988. She trained at Kozeev's World of Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from high school a semester early to join Alabama for the 2007 season.
In 1998, Alyssa competed level five at the first sectional in South Carolina. In 1999, she won bars at the Charleston Cup. Alyssa moved up to level six in 2000. She placed third on bars at the Charleston Cup. Alyssa competed level seven in 2001. She finished second on bars at the State Championships. She competed level nine in 2003. She qualified to Easterns. In 2004, Alyssa began competing level ten. She finished third all-around at the 2005 Atlanta Crown Invitational. She won vault, beam, and floor at the State Championships. She placed fourth on beam at Regionals. In 2006, she won all five gold medals at the State Championships. She finished 13th all-around at Regionals.
As a freshman at Alabama in 2007, she red shirt the season. She was an NACGC/W Scholastic All-American and on the Dean's List. In 2008, Alyssa exhibitioned on vault. She was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a Scholastic All-American. During the 2009 season, Alyssa competed on vault and floor. She again earned SEC Academic Honor Roll and Scholastic All-American honors. In 2010, Alyssa competed on floor at Penn State. She earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Dean's List and Scholastic All-American honors. Alyssa competed on beam and floor against Penn State in 2011. She also competed on floor against Arkansas. She was named to the SEC Community Service Team.
