Amy Chow was born in San Jose, California on May 15, 1978. She is the daughter of Nelson and Susan. Her brother Kevin was a gymnast at Stanford. Amy began gymnastics in 1981. She trained at West Valley Gymnastics. Her favorite event is bars.
In 1990, Amy placed sixth all-around at the American Classic and seventh all-around at the US Classic. She was first on beam at the US Classic. Amy competed at her first Nationals in 1991. She finished 11th all-around and made the national team.
At the US Classic in 1992, Amy finished fifth all-around. At Nationals she won the gold medal on the vault and finished sixth all-around. Amy saw her first international competition. At the USA-Argentina meet in Buenos Aires, she helped the USA team finish first. Amy also competed at the Mexico Olympic Festival where she swept the gold medals. The 1993 year was not very good. She competed in two meets, the National Championships and the USA-Japan meet. She had a great meet in Japan but had a disastrous national championships.
Amy came back strongly in 1994. At the American Classic she finished tenth all-around. She improved to eighth at the US Olympic Festival. Amy had a fabulous meet at the US Classic, finishing second all-around. At Nationals she finished fifth all-around. Amy ended the national season at the World Team Trials. Before heading to Dortmund, she competed at a dual meet against Romania. At Worlds, the USA surprised everyone and took home the silver medal.
Amy competed at the 1995 American Cup and Pan Am Games. She finished first on vault at the Pan Am Games. At the American Classic, she was fourth all-around and first on vault. Amy took home the gold in the all-around at the Budget Invitational. Amy competed at the US Classic before Nationals. At Nationals she finished eighth all-around. She improved to fifth at the World Team Trials.
In 1996, Amy started her season by finishing third at the American Classic. She competed in France before attending the Individual World Championships. Amy made the Olympic Team. In Atlanta, she helped the SA win first and also took home a silver on bars. Amy did some pro competitions before retired.
In 1999, Amy competed at the world team trials before pulling out due to an injury. She came back in 2000. At the RCA Gymnastics Challenge she won bars. Amy finished first at the Bluewater International and fifth all-around at the Pacific Alliance. At Nationals, she was sixth all-around. Amy was named to the 2000 Olympic Team.
