Rebecca Catherine Elizabeth Clauson was born on March 8, 1984. She is the daughter of Cathy and Dennis. She has two sisters, Anna and Chelsey. She trained at TAGS in Minnesota during her club career.
She began competing as a level ten in 1998. She qualified to the JO National Championships. In 1999, she was the bars and beam state champion for Minnesota. She also made it to Regionals and JO Nationals. In 2000, Rebecca placed second on vault and third in the all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she won floor. In 2001, she won the all-around at Regionals and States. She finished ninth all-around at the JO Nationals. Her final JO Nationals was in 2002. She finished fifth all-around.
Rebecca began her career at the University of Michigan. As a freshman, she was named an NCAA All-American first team on beam. She finished fifth at the NCAA Event Finals on beam. Rebecca was also named to All-Big Ten Conference Second Team. As a sophomore, she was All-Big Ten second team and Academic All-Big Team. She repeated that honor in 2005 as a junior. As a senior, she was NCAA All-America second team on floor and All-Big Ten second team. Rebecca was also Academic All Big Ten. She graduated in 2006. During her senior season, she was an NCAA second-team All-American on floor. She was also on the Academic All-Big Ten Team and All-Big Ten second team. She won the all-around, vault, bars and floor at the State of Michigan Classic.
