Catherine Nguyen was born on February 24, 1991. She is a native of Sugarland, Texas. She has two sisters, Christine and Crystal. Christine is a former US National Team Member and standout at the University of North Carolina. Catherine began gymnastics in 1996. She trained at World Olympic Gymnastics Academy with Evgeny Marchenko and Natasha Boyarskaya during her club career.
In 2004, Catherine competed as a level nine. She won floor at the Metroplex Invitational. She also placed second on bars and beam. At the State Championships, Catherine did not have her best meet. She still qualified to Regionals. At Regionals, Catherine scored over a point higher than at States. She won the all-around title! Catherine also finished on vault, bars, and floor. Her final meet of the season was Westerns. She placed first on bars. Catherine ended her season fourth all-around!
She went elite in 2005. Her season began in the winter of 2004 at the Voronin Cup in Eastern Europe. Catherine placed high on beam and floor. At the WOGA Classic, she competed only on one event. Catherine qualified to junior international elite. She finished in the top fifteen at the US Classic! This qualified her for the US National Championships. In 2006, Catherine competed at several open invitationals. She won the AOGC Invite. She won the Friendship Classic, which featured several international gymnasts. The first USA elite meet was the US Classic. She placed eighth all-around! Catherine finished in the exact same spot at Nationals! She qualified for the US National Team.
She moved into the senior division in 2007. She competed at the US National Championships. She competed at the 2008 US Classic. She did not compete on uneven bars. During her freshman year at Stanford, she competed on beam against Cal and floor at the Regional Championships.
