Emily Cornwell was born on February 28, 1992. She trained at Rising Star Gymnastics through the 2004 season. She then moved to Wright's Gymnastics Academy. Emily graduated from high school in 2010.

In 2004, Emily competed level eight. She placed third on vault and fourth all-around at Regionals. She moved up to level nine in 2005. She finished sixth all-around at Regionals. Emily competed at Easterns in 2006. She placed eighth on bars and floor. Emily began competing level seven in 2007. She placed third all-around at the For Love or Money meet. In 2008, Emily won beam and placed second all-around at the For Love or Money meet. She qualified to JO Nationals.

Emily continued competing level ten in 2009. She won bars and beam at the Gymnast Jam. She placed second all-around at the Surf City Classic. At the For Love or Money meet, she finished third all-around. Emily placed first on beam and second all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished 15th all-around. She placed fifth on beam. In 2010, Emily finished first on floor at the For Love or Money meet. She won the all-around title at the BIG Dream Classic. At the Derby Classic, she placed second all-around. Emily won beam at Regionals.

As a freshman at UNC, Emily competed on bars and floor in almost every meet. She competed on beam four times. Emily also had one all-around performance.
