Courtney Cowles was born on August 27, 1998. She trains at New England Gymnastics Express.

In 2006, Courtney competed level four and five during the spring season. She moved up to level six in the fall. At the State Championships, she won bars, beam, floor and the all-around. She immediately moved in to level seven competition in January of 2007. Courtney placed third all-around and first on beam at the Northeast Invitational. At the American Flyer's Cup, she won beam, floor and the all-around. Courtney concluded her season at the State Championships, winning beam, floor and the all-around. In the fall, she made the National TOPs Team.

Courtney moved up to level eight in 2008. She won vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the American Flyer's Cup. At Regionals, she finished in the top ten. Courtney made the National TOPs "B" Team in the fall. She continued competing level eight in 2009. She won bars at the Excalibur Cup. At the American Flyer's Cup, she won bars and beam. Courtney won vault, beam and the all-around at States. She had the highest score out of every level eight competitor regardless of age. She then finished third on beam at Regionals. Courtney qualified to hopes later that spring. She competed at the US Challenge.

She moved up to level nine in 2010. She won a bronze medal on beam at the Cancun Classic and a silver at the Sand Dollar Invitational. At the IGI Chicago Style, she finished third on floor. In late February, she qualified to hopes again at the Buckeye Classic. Courtney won bars, beam, floor and the all-around at States.
