Janae Cox was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 30, 1985. Her parents are Rick and Jan. She has one sister, Jo Lynn, and two brothers, J.T. and Jason. She is the youngest. Janae has seven cousins and three dogs. Jana trained at Southern Indiana Gymnastics School during her club career.

She made the JO National Championships in 1996. In 1997, she competed as a child national elite and as a level 10. At the Level 10 Nationals, she finished second all-around. At the US Challenge she finished third overall as a child national elite. Her next meet was called the National Gymnastics Festival. She finished third all-around. In the fall, she traveled to Australia for the Canberra Cup. Janae won the all-around and floor titles.

In 1998, Janae made junior international elite. At the American Classic she finished fourth all-around. She competed at the Junior Pan Am Championships. Janae helped the USA team win the gold medal. At the Fagnae Cup in Belgium she won the all-around and floor titles. At the US National Championships, she finished sixth all-around.

In 1999, Janae competed at the International Team Championships and Canadian Dual Meet. She made her second National Team. In 2000, she competed at the American Classic. Janae took a break from high-level gymnastics.

In 2003, she won the all-around title at the JO National Championships. She began attending West Virginia University. She was the 2004 EAGL Rookie of the Year. She was first-team all EAGL on vault, bars, beam and all-around and second-team on floor. Janae was a member of the EAGL Academic team and NACGC All-American for scholastics. She also made NCAA Championships as an individual. As a sophomore, Janae made her second NCAA championships. She was first team all-EAGL in the all-around, beam and floor and second team on bars. She was an All-American and All-EAGL for academics. Janae finished competing after her senior season.
