Jamie Deetscreek was born on May 4, 1988. She is the daughter of Jean and Gary. Her father is a golf pro and her mother is a pharmacist. They both graduated from Temple University. She has one sister, Chrissy, and one brother, Michael. Jamie graduated from Keith Valley Middle School. She attended Hatboro-Horsham High School. She began gymnastics in 1991 when she was three and a half. Her mom saw an ad in the newspaper and thought it would be fun for Jamie to take classes. Jamie trained at Ricochets under Troy Miller, Janet Hamvas, Chris Zimmerman and Amanda Greer.

In 1999, Jamie competed as a level nine. She finished fourth all-around at States. She won two bronze medals, one on bars and the other on floor. By 2001, Jamie was competing as a level ten. She finished third all-around at States. She won a silver on bars and beam. At Regionals, she won the uneven bars title. Jamie continued competing as a level ten until college. She finished third all-around and first on bars at States. At Regionals, Jamie placed fourth all-around and first on the uneven bars. Her final meet was the JO National Championships. She won the all-around and beam titles.

She did not compete in 2003. In 2004, she won beam at Regionals. She finished second all-around. Jamie won her second JO National Title. She also won bars and beam. In 2005, Jamie won the state crown. She won every event except for floor. At Regionals, she won the same four events. She ended her season with a seventh place finish at the JO National Championships. In her senior season, she finished fifth all-around at States. Jamie won beam and placed second at Regionals. She only competed two events at the JO National Championships.

As a freshman, she competed against Utah State and Nebraska. She competed on vault, bars and beam. She was an NACGC Scholastic All-American. She also made the Dean's List and the Athletics Academic Honor Roll. She greatly improved in 2008. She made the NCAA Championship lineup on beam. She made the beam lineup in every meet but the first one. She competed on bars nine times. She was an NACGC Scholastic All-American and Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete. For the second year in a row, she made the Dean's List and Athletics Academic Honor Roll.

Jamie continued to improve as a junior at Utah. She was named a Mountain West Conference Scholar Athlete. She made the Dean's List and Athletics Academic Honor Roll. She began competing in the all-around. She competed all four events at the NCAA Championships. She earned second-team All-American honors on bars. She went without a fall to the NCAA Championships. She competed in the all-around in all eleven meets. She won two individual titles.
