Sophina DeJesus was born on October 6, 1994. She has a sister named Savannah who competed as a level four in 2005. Sophina and Savannah competed in Team Gymnastics for Fallbrook Gymnastics in 2003. Sophina trained at SCEGA through the 2006 season. She then switched to SCATS HB and Diamond Elite Gymnastics a few months later. Sophina moved to Precision Gymnastics after the Diamond Elite optional coaches moved. Sophina moved back to SCEGA in the fall of 2008. Besides being a gymnast, Sophina is also an actor. She has been on the television show "Hip Hop Harry" with her sister Savannah. She is also an international dancer.
In 2004, Sophina competed as a level seven. She finished second on beam at the San Diego Classic. She won the all-around title at the California Classic. Sophina won bars and beam and finished second on bars and floor. At the Desert Devils Classic, she finished first on floor and second all-around. Sophina moved up to level eight for the 2005 season. At her first meet, the WOGA Classic, she won floor and finished third on vault and bars. At the San Diego Classic, Sophina won the all-around title. She won the all-around at the Surf City Classic, Golden State Friendship Challenge and California Classic. Sophina also won vault and floor at each of those meets. Her final two meets of the season were States and Regionals. At States, she swept the gold medals! She won every event except for bars at Regionals. She finished third on bars.
Sophina moved up to level nine in 2006. She did not compete in the all-around at the Crystal Cup or San Diego Classic. She won beam and floor at the San Diego Classic. Sophina finished fourth all-around at the Hard Rock Invitational. She swept the gold medals at the California Classic. She won the all-around at the Golden State Friendship Challenge and the Long Beach Open. At States, she finished third on vault and second on floor. Her next meet was Regionals. Sophina finished third all-around. She won floor and finished second on beam. Her final meet of the season was Westerns. She finished second on beam and fourth all-around!
She competed as a level ten and junior pre-elite in 2007. Sophina won the level ten state all-around title. She missed making JO Nationals by a few spots at Regionals. Sophina qualified to junior pre-elite in the late spring. At the US Challenge in Michigan, she finished second overall in the junior pre-elite division. She won beam. Sophina qualified to junior international elite at the Parkette National Qualifier in 2008! She qualified for the US National Championships at the Elite Qualifier. Sophina finished 14th at the US National Championships. In the fall, she moved back to SCEGA. She was invited to the PAGU Exchange Camp. She won the all-around. In 2009, Sophina finished fifth all-around at the American Classic. She finished third on bars. Sophina then traveled to Des Moines, Iowa for the US Covergirl Classic, where she placed 27th overall and 15th on uneven bars. A few weeks later, Sophina competed at the VISA Championships in Dallas, Texas. On the first day of the meet, she placed 16th overall and fifth on balance beam. During the second day, Sophina finished impressive ninth in the all-around and fourth on balance beam, landing a spot on the Junior National Team! Right after the VISA Championships, Sophina was selected to represent the USA team at the Junior Japan International in September. In Japan, Sophina finished fourth in the all-around and first on floor exercise with a 14.300.
Sophina started her 2010 season at the SCEGA's California Classic, where she won gold medals on uneven bars and balance beam. In July, Sophina traveled to Chicago, Illinois for the US Covergirl Classic and only competed on two events. Unfortunately, Sophina was unable to compete at the VISA Championships due to an injury. In 2011, Sophina competed on bars at the California Classic. She placed second on bas and fifth all-around at the American Classic. She competed on three events at the US Classic. She won bars at the 2012 California Classic.
As a freshman at UCLA in 2013, Sophina competed on bars, beam and floor. She earned two Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week honors. She also won two event titles and had five top three finishes. In 2014, Sophina earned second-team regular season All-American honors on bars. She was a mainstay on bars and beam. She also saw limited action on floor.
