Kathryn Ding was born in Saratoga Springs, New York on November 20, 1990. She was on the National TOPs Team in 2000. She qualified to TOPs National Testing in 2001. She trained at Starz Gymnastics in Reno until 2005. She then switched to Flips USA.
Kathryn got her first taste of elite in 2002. At the US Challenge, she competed as a child national elite. In 2003, Kathryn competed at the 2003 US Challenge as a junior national elite. She competed level ten and junior pre-elite in 2004. She was a level ten regional qualifier. Kathryn competed at the American Challenge and the US Challenge. At the US Challenge, she placed high enough to become a member of the National Elite Training Squad.
In 2005, she decided to compete as a level ten only. She placed third all-around at States and fourth all-around at Regionals. By placing in the top seven at regionals, Kathryn qualified to the JO National Championships. After the level ten season, she competed at the trampoline and tumbling National Championships as a level ten on all three events. Kathryn had a great 2006 season. She won States and Regionals. At the JO National Championships, she finished second all-around and first on bars. By placing in the top four, she became a member of the JO National Team.
Kathryn placed second all-around at the Flips USA Invitational in January of 2008. She won beam. She won vault, floor and the all-around at the San Diego Classic. She finished second all-around at the Hard Rock Invitational. At the Spirit of the Flame Challenge, she won five gold medals! She won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished second all-around. She placed fifth on bars at JO Nationals.
She started 2008 off by winning the Flips USA Invitational. She won bars, beam, floor and the all-around. Kathryn finished second all-around at the San Diego Classic. She won bars. She won bars, beam and the all-around at the IGI Chicago Style. At the Spirit of the Flame Challenge, she took the vault and beam titles. She finished second all-around. At the Golden State Classic, she won floor. Kathryn did not compete at States. She finished fifth all-around at Regionals. She ended her season at JO Nationals.
As a freshman at the University of Georgia, she was quickly forced to compete after her teammate became injured during warmups. She competed her first beam routine. She led off on bars against Florida with a career-best. She won vault again Kentucky and Centenary. She set another career high on bars at the SEC Championships. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. She earned All-American status on uneven bars. She finished in a tie for fifth out of sixteen in event finals.
