Danielle Johnson was born in Lindsay, California, on May 29, 1985. She is the daughter of Janice Johnson. She has three older siblings, Jenn, CJ and Jeremy. Danielle graduated from Temescal Canyon High School in Lake Elsinore, California, in 2003.

During her club career, Danielle competed for Southern California Elite Gymnastics Academy. She was coached by Tim Garrison, Kathy Strate and Meredith Paulicivic. In 2002, she competed at the Level 9 National Championships. She finished ninth all-around. In 2003, Danielle competed at the level ten State and Regional Championships. She did not compete in very many meets for San Jose State. She did compete on vault in her senior season.
