Brenna Dowell was born on March 4, 1996. Her sister Lauren was also a gymnast. Brenna trained at Great American Gymnastics Express (GAGE) in Missouri. She graduated from high school in 2014.

In 2005, Brenna competed level six. She finished second on vault and in the all-around at States. She jumped up to level eight in 2006. She competed at the Starz and Stripes Invitational. Brenna repeated level eight in 2007. She finished fifth all-around at the Dragon Invitational and Spirit of the Flame Challenge. At the State Championships, she placed second on bars and beam. She won vault and floor at Regionals. She finished second on beam and third all-around.

Brenna moved up to level nine in 2008. She won vault at the IGHOF Invitational. She placed second all-around. At the State Championships, she won vault, bars and floor. She finished second all-around. At Westerns, she placed 14th all-around. She finished in the top ten on vault and bars. She advanced to level ten in 2009. She won vault at the KC Coed Invitational. She placed second all-around. Brenna won vault at the Dragon Invitational. At the Palm Beach Invitational, she qualified to junior pre-elite. Brenna next finished third all-around at States. At Regionals, she placed third on bars and beam. She qualified for JO Nationals. Brenna had her best meet all season, placing second in the all-around. She earned a spot on the JO National Team. On the individual events, she won vault and placed second on floor.

In late June, Brenna earned her junior international elite compulsory score at the Parkette Elite Qualifier. She earned her optional score at the July National Qualifier. At the US Classic, she finished 16th all-around. She qualified for the US National Championships. In 2010, Brenna finished fourth on bars at the Visa Championships. She made the US National Team! She then competed at the Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she helped the United States team win the gold medal. Brenna finished third on vault and fifth all-around at the 2011 US Classic. At the Visa Championships, she placed fifth on vault, sixth on bars, eighth on floor and sixth all-around! She maintained her spot on the US National Team. Brenna moved up to the senior division in 2012. She represented the United States at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy where she finished second on bars and seventh all-around. Brenna placed ninth all-around at the Visa Championships. She competed at the Olympic Trials. Later that fall, Brenna won the all-around at the Mexican Open. In 2013, Brenna finished third all-around at the City of Jesolo meet in Italy. She also finished fifth all-around at the USA, Germany and Romania Tri-Meet. She placed third all-around at the US Classic. She also finished fourth on floor and sixth on bars. At the US National Championships, she placed third on bars and the all-around! She also finished fifth on floor. Brenna was invited to the World Selection Camp and was later named an alternate for the World Team. In 2014, Brenna placed second all-around at the American Cup. Unfortunately, she was limited to bars by an ankle injury during the summer elite season. She was named the non-traveling alternate for the World Championships.
