Cassandra May Drew was born in Racine, Wisconsion on December 9, 1987. She is the daughter of Jon and Sonya Drew. She has a sister named Tamara. Cassie was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated from Leesville Road High School in 2003. She trained at Gymcarolina during her club career.

In 1999, Cassie competed as a level nine. She finished third all-around at States. She won a silver on beam. She moved up to level ten in 2000. At the State Championships, Cassie finished third on beam. She qualified for Regionals. She continued competing as a level ten in 2001. She won the all-around, vault and floor titles at States. At Regionals, she won a bronze on floor. In 2002, Cassie placed fourth all-around at States. She competed at Regionals. She finished her club career by winning the 2003 Level 10 State Title.

Cassie also competed in high school gymnastics for Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. The team was undefeated during her freshman and sophomore seasons. Cassie had her best year her senior season. She won the North Carolina High School all-around and floor titles. She finished second on beam and bars at the State Meet.

At the University of Arkansas, At the University of Arkansas, Cassie had a successful freshman campaign. She competed in the all-around with improvement in nearly every meet. She held three of Arkansas' top ten marks on beam. She was a solid three-event competitor in her sophomore season. She competed on vault, bars and beam but added floor in the last four meets of the season. She also scored the third highest beam score at Arkansas. As a junior, she competed in the all-around for the first three meets. She did not do all-around for two but returned for the next seven.
