Dusti Russell was born on August 6, 1992. Both of her parents were collegiate gymnasts at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Dusti has two sisters. Her oldest sister, Rehana, competed for Minnesota. Miranda competed for Arizona. Dusti trained at Oshkosh Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2010.

In 2005, Dusti competed level nine. She won floor at the Vegas Vacation meet. She finished sixth all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed eighth on floor and tenth on bars. She finished 18th all-around. Dusti moved up to level ten in 2006. She finished fourth all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished 31st all-around. In 2007, Dusti placed first on bars at the AOGC Invitational. She finished second on beam and floor at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished 29th all-around. Dusti won floor and the all-around at Regionals in 2008. At JO Nationals, she placed tenth on beam and 13th all-around.

Dusti finished second all-around at the 2009 Sand Dollar Invitational. She won beam and floor at the Harley Davidson meet. At the OGC Optional Invitational, she won beam and floor. Dusti won bars, beam and floor at the State Championships. She finished second all-around. At Regionals, she placed first on beam and third all-around. Dusti placed fifth on floor and 23rd all-around at JO Nationals. In 2010, she won beam and the all-around at the Winter Luau. She finished first on bars and floor at the Blizzard Invitational. Dusti finished first on bars and second all-around at the Harley Davidson meet and OGC Optional Invitational. At the State Championships, she won bars and floor. Dusti finished first on beam and floor at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she placed ninth on floor and 12th all-around.

As a freshman at Minnesota in 2011, Dusti competed in the all-around in the first two meets before an elbow injury. She earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week after finishing third in the all-around against Iowa. Dusti's award was the first in Minnesota history. She returned in late February on beam and floor.
