Jessica Marie Duke was born in Illinois on October 5, 1985. She has three brothers (David, Daniel, Matthew) and two sisters (Jamie, Madeline). Both of her parents graduated from Bringham Young University. Jessica graduated from Waterford High School in 2004. She trained at Olympus School of Gymnastics under coaches Mary Wright and Ryan Kirkham during her club career.

In 2000, Jessica competed as a level ten. She won the all-around at JO Nationals. After the level ten season, she qualified to junior international elite. Jessica competed at the US Classic. In 2003, Jessica placed second all-around at the Utah State Championships. She won vault and floor. At Regionals, Jessica finished third all-around. She won vault. Her final meet of the season was the JO National Championships. Jessica finished tenth all-around. In 2004, she finished second all-around at Regionals. At the JO National Championships, she placed fourteenth all-around.

As a freshman at the University of Utah, she went the entire season without a fall. She competed on vault and bars. As a sophomore, Jessica continued competing on vault and bars. She competed in the all-around against UCLA. She hit her four routines at NCAA Championships. She earned second-team All-American honors on uneven bars as a junior. All of her bars scores counted for the team. She competed in the all-around in the first three meets. She made the Athletics Academic Honor Roll. During her senior year, she continued to be instrumental in the Utah bar lineup. She finished her career with two event titles.
