Elizabeth Durkac was born on January 8, 1991 in Panama City, Florida. Elizabeth's two sisters, Cheryl and Angela, were both competitive gymnasts. Elizabeth competed for Gymnastics World- East in Arizona in 2002. She then moved to the gym's central location during the spring of 2003. She trained at Tumbleweeds in the fall before returning to Gymnastics World- East. After the 2004 season, Elizabeth and her family moved to Virginia. She spent the remainder of her club career at World Class Gymnastics. She graduated from high school in 2009.

In 2002, Elizabeth competed level seven. She moved up to level eight in 2003. She won beam at the State Championships. She finished third on floor at Regionals. Elizabeth competed level nine in 2004. She placed third on beam at both the Flips USA Invitational and Winter Sun Invitational. At the Desert Devils Classic, Elizabeth finished second on beam. She placed third on bars and beam at the State Championships. At Regionals, Elizabeth placed sixth all-around and third on beam. She finished 24th all-around at Westerns, placing tenth on floor.

Elizabeth continued competing level nine in 2005. She finished second all-around at the State Championships. She won bars and the all-around at Regionals. At Easterns, she won bars! She placed third all-around, eighth on beam and seventh on floor. She began competing level ten in 2006. She finished fourth all-around at the Hard Rock Invitational. She won vault, bars, beam and the all-around at the State Championships. At JO Nationals, she finished sixth on beam. She did not compete on floor because of an ankle injury sustained during the competition. Later that year, Elizabeth qualified to junior pre-elite. She competed at the US Challenge.

She continued competing level ten in 2007. Elizabeth finished third all-around and first on beam at the State Championships. She finished 29th all-around at JO Nationals. In 2008, Elizabeth won vault, bars and the all-around at the State Championships. She placed third all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished sixth on beam and 14th all-around. Elizabeth won vault, bars, beam and the all-around at the Gymnastics in Paradise meet in 2009. She also won the all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. At the State Championships, she won vault and beam. Elizabeth finished second all-around. She won the all-around title at Regionals. At the JO National Championships, she placed eighth on bars. She finished 25th all-around.

As a freshman at UNC, Elizabeth earned first-team all-EAGL tournament honors on uneven bars. Elizabeth competed on bars solidly throughout the season. She also competed on vault three times and beam twice. She picked up her first event win on bars against Maryland.
