Kendra Elm was born on November 21, 1988. She trained at Olympic Gymnastics Academy during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2007.

In 2003, Kendra competed level nine. She competed at Regionals. In 2004, she won bars at the Vegas Cup. She finished fifth all-around at Regionals. She competed at Westerns. In 2005, she won bars and the all-around at the Maryland Classic. She won vault, bars, beam and the all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed first on vault, bars and the all-around! She also placed seventh on beam and tenth on floor. Kendra moved up to level ten in 2006. She finished second all-around at the National Judges Cup. She won bars at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. At Regionals, she won bars and placed third all-around. She did not compete at JO Nationals because of an injury. Kendra finished second all-around at Regionals in 2007. She placed tenth on bars at JO Nationals.

As a freshman in 2008, Kendra competed on bars in all 14 meets. She performed on floor 13 times. In 2009, Kendra competed on bars and floor in every meet. She competed in the all-around ten times. She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. Kendra competed in the all-around twelve times in 2010. She finished in the top three on bars four times. Kendra earned her second Academic All-Big 10 honor.

During her senior season in 2011, Kendra competed in the all-around throughout the season. She won five titles. She finished first against Michigan State. Kendra won beam against Air Force. At the Best of Minnesota meet, she won the all-around title. Kendra also won the all-around title against Iowa State. At Fullerton, she finished first on bars and the all-around. She was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.
