Lauren Elmore was born in Bloomington, Indiana on November 1, 1985. She is the daughter of D.G. and Virginia. She is the second oldest of six siblings. Her sisters are Hillary and Claire. Her three brothers are Grant, Trent and Brock. She began gymnastics in 1988 at Indiana Gymnastics. She trained at Indiana Gymnastics Training School from 1998 to 2000. Lauren trained at Wright's American Gymnastics in Indiana for the majority of her club career.

In 1998, she qualified to the JO National Championships. She placed tenth all-around at the 2000 JO National Championships. She won the JO National All-Around title in 2003! She also placed fourth on beam and third on floor. Lauren was named to the 2003 Regional All Star Team. She was also the Region 5 Junior Olympic Athlete of the Year! Lauren qualified to the JO national Championships five times.

She began attending Stanford in the fall of 2004. She was a reliable competitor in the all-around. She competed in the all-around in ten of the eleven meets. As a sophomore, Lauren was injured for most of the season. She competed on beam three times. She was named an Academic All-American by the NACGC and the All Pac-10 Academic team. During her junior season, she competed on bars and floor five times. Lauren competed on beam all season long. She earned Academic All-American status. As a senior, she earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors on floor.
