Samantha Rose Engle was born on August 26, 1989. She trained at WOGA in Plano, Texas until 2003. In 2004, she began competing for Dallas Gymnastics Center. She followed her coach to Kurt Thomas in 2005 and Metroplex in December of 2006.

In 2001, Samantha competed as a level nine. She moved up to leve ten in 2002. She placed in the top ten all-around at States. In 2003, Samantha competed as an elite at the International Hall of Fame Classic. With Dallas Gymnastics Center, Samantha improved greatly. She won the all-around title at the WOGA Classic! At Regionals, Sam placed second all-around. She finished second on bars and third on beam as well. At JO Nationals, she finished third on beam and in the top ten all-around!

She continued competing as a level ten in 2005. Samantha placed second all-around at the WOGA Classic. She won the Regional all-around title! At JO Nationals, Samantha became the JO National All-Around Champion! She did not compete in 2006 because of a wrist injury. She returned with strong results in 2007. She finished second all-around at the California Classic. At Regionals, she won beam, floor and the all-around. She finished second on vault and bars. She won floor at JO Nationals. She placed fourth on beam.

As a freshman at LSU, she was in the lineup on beam and floor. She helped the LSU Tigers qualify for the Super Six. As a sophomore, she competed every meet on bars and also was a regular on beam. She competed on floor five times. She won her first event title on beam against Iowa. In 2010, Samantha competed on beam and floor in every meet and bars in every competition besides one. She earned second-team All-American honors on bars. Samantha was also honored by the SEC Academic Honor Roll. She earned three event titles on beam and one on bars. As a senior in 2011, Samantha competed in the all-around for the first time in her career at the SEC Championships and NCAA Regionals. She earned two event titles on beam in 2011 including a dual competition against Georgia. She earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the second year in a row.
