Sarah Finnegan was born on November 14, 1996. Her sisters, Hannah, Aleah and Jennah are also competitive gymnasts. Sarah trained at St. Louis Gymnastics Centre through the 2008 season. She then moved to GAGE.

In 2006, Sarah competed level six. She placed second on floor at the Show-Me Invite. In December, she won vault and beam at the Eagles Winter Invite as a level seven. In 2007, she won beam, floor and the all-around at the Meet Me In St. Louis meet. At the Surf City Classic, she placed second on beam. Sarah competed level eight in 2008. She finished third on beam at Regionals. She placed ninth all-around. She moved up to level nine in 2009. She finished second on beam at the Palm Beach Invitational. She won the all-around title at the State Championships. At Regionals, Sarah won vault, beam, floor and the all-around. She ended her season at Westerns, placing second all-around. She finished third on vault and floor.

Sarah competed level ten in 2010. She won floor at the KC Co-Ed Invitational. At the Dragon Invitational, she placed second all-around. She swept the gold medals at the State Championships. At Regionals, she won beam. She finished second on bars and in the all-around. She placed eighth all-around at JO Nationals. She also finished sixth on vault and second on beam. In June, she qualified to junior international elite and the US National Championships. She finished eleventh all-around at the US Classic, highlighted by a fourth place finish on floor. At the US National Championships, Sarah finished sixth all-around, earning a guaranteed spot on the US National Champion. She also placed fourth on beam and first on floor! Later that fall, Sarah competed at the Pan American Championships. She placed third on beam in addition to helping the United States win the gold medal. In 2011, Sarah finished first on floor, third on bars and fourth all-around at the US Classic. At the US National Championships, she placed third on beam and the all-around! She also placed fifth on bars.
