Fumina Kobayashi was born on February 13, 1992. Her sister, Kana, is also a gymnast. Fumina Trained at Missy Marlowe's School of Gymnastics through the 2003 season. She then trained at Gymnastics Training Center (GTC) in Utah until the 2007 season. She then began competing for Olympus Gymnastics. She graduated from high school a semester early, joining the Utes for the 2010 season.

Fumina made the National TOPs Team in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, she competed level nine. She finished second on vault at the State Championships. She placed in the top fifteen all-around at Regionals. She moved up to level ten in 2004. Fumina finished fourth all-around at the State Championships. She competed at Regionals. In 2006, she finished in the top ten at the Starz and Stripes Invitational. Fumina won the all-around title at the 2007 Level 10 State Championships. In 2008, she won beam, her only event, at the State Championships. Fumina finished first on floor and third all-around at the 2009 State Championships. She competed at Regionals.

As a freshman at Utah, she competed on beam twice. She performed three exhibition vaults. Fumina was an NACGC Scholastic All-American. She also made the Dean's List and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
