Houry Gebeshian was born on July 27, 1989 to Christine and Hagap. She trained at Masstars during her club career under Patrick Palmer, Shixin Mao and Doc Massimo. She received a full scholarship to the University of Iowa.
In 1999, Houry won the level six state title. She moved up to level seven the next. Houry won States again. She jumped up to level nine in 2001. She competed as a level nine until 2003, when she won the state all-around title.
Houry competed as a level ten in 2005. She qualified to the JO National Championships. In 2006, she won the Aquafina Team Challenge. Houry placed second all-around and first on bars at States. At Regionals, she finished third all-around. She placed in the top twenty at JO Nationals. In 2007, she won bars at States.
As a freshman at Iowa, she scored a 9.9 on beam against Minnesota and Ohio State, winning both times. She placed in the top three on beam four additional times. Houry also spent time as an all-around competitior. She competed on bars and beam every meet. She continued to improve in 2009 as a sophomore. She scored higher then a 9.7 on vault in every meet. She competed on every event in every meet for Iowa. She placed first all-around four times. She earned first-team all-Big Ten selection and academic all-Big Ten selection.
