Avery Gee was born on March 13, 1989. She trained at Twisters Gymnastics through the 2005 season. She then moved to Airborne. She graduated from high school in 2007.

In 2003, Avery competed level nine. She finished third all-around at the Vegas Vacation. In 2004, Avery placed third on vault and sixth all-around at the State Championships. She placed in the top fifteen all-around at Regionals. In 2005, Avery finished sixth all-around at the State Championships. She did not compete at Regionals. Avery won vault and beam at the 2006 Flips USA Invitational. She won all five gold medals at the Go For It Classic. At the AOGC Invitational, she placed first on vault, bars, floor and the all-around. Avery won vault, beam and the all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed first on vault, floor and the all-around. Avery placed third on vault, first on beam, second on floor and seventh all-around at Westerns.

Avery concluded her club career in 2007. She won beam at the Lady Luck Invitational. Avery won all five gold medals at the San Diego Classic. At the Hard Rock Invitational, Avery won vault, floor and the all-around. She won vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. At the State Championships, Avery won vault, beam, floor and the all-around. She placed first on beam, floor and the all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she won vault, beam and the all-around! She placed third on bars and second on floor.

As a freshman at Cal in 2008, Avery placed second on beam in a tri-meet against Davis and Towson. Avery also competed on floor as a freshman. In 2009, Avery qualified to NCAA Regionals as an individual on floor. Avery competed in the all-around throughout the season. She finished third on floor at the Sacramento State quad meet. In 2010, Avery earned Second-Team All-Pac-10 honors in the all-around. She was an NACGC/W Scholastic All-American. Avery was also a Pac-10 All-Academic team honorable mention. She competed in the all-around in all but two meets. As a senior in 2011, Avery competed in the all-around four times. She competed on vault, beam and floor consistently throughout the season.
