Melissa Genovese was born on May 4, 1984. She trained at Sierra Gold until 2002. She then trained at All Star Gymnastics. She is the daughter of Jeff and Tamara. She graduated in 2002 from Charter Community School in Placerville, California.

She competed level ten in 2001 and 2002. In 2001, Melissa competed at JO Nationals. In 2002, she finished fifth all-around at JO Nationals. Melissa competed as a senior national elite at the 2002 US Challenge. She won the all-around. She finished second at the 2003 American Challenge as a senior national elite.

In the fall of 2004, Melissa began her career at Sac State. She reached West Regionals as an event specialist on beam. Melissa regularly competed on beam and bars during her sophomore season. She helped Sac State qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships. During her junior year, she finished sixth on beam at the West Regional. She won beam at the WAC Championships. She earned first team all-WAC on beam and second-team on floor. She won beam five times. She competed in the all-around at every meet. As a senior, Melissa set the school record on beam. She earned four WAC Specialist of the Week honors.
