Stephanie Teresa Renea Gentry was born in Houston, Texas on June 23, 1987. She is the daughter of Tim and Tammie. Stephanie has one brother, Tim, who is currently on the US National Team. Her cousin, Shelby Salmon, was also a elite gymnast. Stephanie started gymnastics at the age of seven in 1993 at a gym in Houston. She joined WOGA as a level eight.

In 1999, she competed as a junior national elite. At the American Challenge, Stephanie finished third all-around. She also competed at the National Gymnastics Festival. Stephanie qualified to junior international elite in 2000. She finished second all-around at the Plano Classic. Her first elite meet was the American Classic. She did much better at the US Classic, where she placed seventh all-around. Stephanie then competed at the US National Championships. She finished tenth all-around. This qualified her for the US National Team. She competed in the USA vs. France international elite.

Stephanie only competed in two meets in 2001 because of an injury. She finished second all-around at the Go For It Classic. In 2002, Stephanie went back to junior international elite. She just missed qualifiing to Nationals. She went to Eastern Europe in the fall. Stephanie competed at the Arquest Tournament and Golden Lilia Tournament. At the Voronin Cup, she won beam! Stephanie moved up to senior international elite in 2003. She finished second all-around at the Parkette invite. Stephanie did well at the American Classic and US Classic. She ended her season at Nationals! Stephanie competed her final year as an elite in 2004. She finished fourth all-around at the Podium Meet!

At Stanford, she competed vault, beam and floor during her freshman season. As a sophmore, she was injured for the majority of the season. She earned a spot on the All Pac-10 Academic Team. During her junior season, she competed on vault throughout the season. She competed on floor twice. As a senior, Stephanie vaulted four times including in the Super Six Finals. She competed on floor routine.
