Shelby Gies was born to David and Donna on October 10, 1991. She has two brothers, Nick and Mike. She began gymnastics at the age of two. Shelby began competing at the age of seven in 1999. She competed for Arena Gymnastics until 2001. Shelby trained at Future Stars Gymnastics in 2002. In 2003, she began competing for Will-Moor. She is currently training there today. Shelby participated in TOPs when she was young. In 1999, she was a member of the Diamond National Team. She was a member of the National TOPs Team in 2000, 2001 and 2002. She signed with the University of Michigan in the fall of 2009.

As a level five, Shelby finished first all-around at the New Jersey State Championships. She also won the level six State Championships. Shelby broke the all-around state record. In level seven, she won States. Shelby broke the state beam record. In 2001, she began competing as a level eight. Shelby won bars at States. She finished fourth all-around. At Regionals, Shelby won bars. With her new new in 2002, she placed third all-around at States. She won bars again. At Regionals, Shelby finished sixth all-around and first on beam. This was her final level eight meet.

In 2003, she competed as a level nine. She won bars, beam, floor and the all-around title at the State Championships. She broke the bars and all-around state record. She then competed at the American Challenge as a TOPs Elite. Shelby won the skill testing. At Regionals, she finished first on bars, beam, floor and in the all-around. Her next meet was Easterns. Shelby finished second all-around! She won bars. After the level nine season, she competed at the US Challenge as a TOPS Elite. She finished first overall!

Her first season as a level ten was in 2004. She placed second on bars at States. In 2005, Shelby won the Parkette Elite Compulsory Qualifier. She then went to States. At States, Shelby won the all-around, bars and beam state titles. She broke the bars, beam and all-around record. At Regionals, she finished fourth all-around. Her final meet of the season was the JO National Championships. She finished eighth all-around! Shelby won the uneven bars title. In 2006, she competed at the level ten state championship. She won the all-around and beam title. After States, Shelby qualified to junior international elite. She competed at the US Classic.

She returned to level ten in 2007. Shelby finished fourth all-around at the Parkette Invitational. She won uneven bars. She then finished fourth all-around at the All Olympic Invitational. At the Capital Cup, she won bars. She won vault, bars and the all-around at States, breaking her own state record. At Regionals, she won bars, beam and the all-around. She finished second on vault and fourth on floor. She did not compete on floor at JO Nationals. She continued having strong results in the 2008 season. In December of 2007, she finished second all-around at the Christmas on the Chesapeake meet. At the Manhattan Classic, she won beam and the all-around. Shelby won floor and the all-around at the Northeast Invitational. She won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the 10 Qualifier. She won vault, bars and the all-around at States. Her all-around score broke the NJ State All-Around Record again. At Regionals, she finished third on vault, first on bars and fourth on floor. She finished eighth all-around, the alternate spot for JO Nationals.

Shelby continued to compete level ten in 2009. She won her only event, bars, at the Rutgers Classic. At the Christmas on the Chesapeake meet in December of 2008, she finished second on bars, floor and in the all-around. She won beam. At the IGI Chicago Style in 2009, she only competed on bars and beam. Shelby finished second and first respectively. At the Starstruck Invitational, she won bars and placed third on beam. She added vault at the Sectional meet. She won vault and bars. That was her final meet of the season.
