Marissa Gutierrez was born on May 16, 1991. She trained at Tigar through the 2004 season. She then moved to Mihaiuc Gymnastics Academy. Marissa spent the last two seasons of her club career with WGA Texans before graduating in 2009.
In 2004, Marissa competed level four. She finished second on bars at the State Championships. Marissa finished tenth all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed sixth on vault. She moved up to level ten in 2005. She finished 15th all-around and sixth on vault at JO Nationals. Marissa won vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the Svetlana Invitational in 2006. She finished third on vault at the Kurt Thomas Invitational. At Regionals, Marissa won vault. She finished second on vault at JO Nationals.
She won the all-around at the Statewide Qualifier in 2007. At the State Championships, Marissa won beam and the all-around. She finished first on vault at Regionals. In 2008, Marissa won vault and beam at the State Championships. She finished second all-around. She did not compete at Regionals. Marissa won vault, beam and the all-around at the 2009 Texas Prime meet. She also won vault and floor at the Hard Rock Invitational. She finished second on beam at the State Championships. At Regionals, she won vault and the all-around. Marissa placed on every event at JO Nationals! She finished third on vault, seventh on bars, eighth on beam and second on floor and in the all-around.
As a freshman at Alabama in 2010, Marissa competed in beam in every meet and on vault in all but one. She also spent time on floor. Marissa won beam against Arizona, her first win. She finished second on beam at the Regional Championships. Marissa was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was the Crimson Tide's Outstanding Freshman.
