Amber Hammerschmidt was born on August 29, 1990. She trained at Gleason's Gymnastics through the 2005 season. She then moved to Twin City Twisters. She graduated from high school in 2008.

In 2004, Amber competed level nine. She won bars and the all-around at the State Championships. She competed at Regionals. Amber moved up to level ten in 2005. She finished second on floor and fourth all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2006, Amber was named Minnesota's Junior Olympic Athlete of the Year. She finished third on beam at Regionals. She finished eighth all-around. Amber continued competing level ten in 2007 and 2008.

As a freshman at Arizona State in 2009, Amber competed on beam in nine meets. She competed on bars once. After transferring to Minnesota for the 2010 season, Amber competed on floor in thirteen of the fourteen meets. She competed on beam in the second half of the season. As a junior in 2011, Amber competed on beam throughout the season. She competed on floor twice.
